Young & Confused

I'm 17 years old and I just left home to study in the city by myself. I know lots don't have that opportunity and I don't want to seem ungrateful but I've been finding this really difficult. I literally don't know anyone out of the hundreds of thousands of people here. My apartment is plain and bare and according to my neighbour there was a suicide here (a real cheer up). The campus is frankly horrible and I feel hated there for absolutely no reason because they all think I'm too young. My parents are a long way from here so a phone call a week is all the friendly contact I'm getting. I've been to three job applications and they've all been unsuccessful (my first three ever), plus I don't have a lot of money left to buy all my meals so a job is really urgent. I just don't understand why it has to be this way, there was nothing for me back home and the people I knew encouraged me to do this. But as I sit here completely alone and hungry on my laptop in some shabby room in a hateful craphole of a city, I'm really starting to regret aspiring to more than working on a farm for the rest of my life.

If you just left home, maybe you should give it a little time. Can you ask the folks to send some money for food? If not, find out where the local food pantry is and go get what you need until you find a job. See if you qualify for food stamps in the state you live in. It will take some time at school to fit in, no doubt. attend events on campus to make friends. If there really is nothing for you back home then no need to rush back without at least trying your new lifestyle out.

i congratulate you for having guts. leaving your home and your family and all you know is very difficult. considering that you are only 17 and this is your first time away living by yourself, it is extremely difficult.

try the clubs in your school and the social events to meet new people. you are a stranger in a new city. does your school not help students find jobs? don't they have a career center and all that good stuff? utilize everything the school has to offer. as far as food goes, you do not even have a few dollars? just so you can go out and buy some ramen noodles or tuna which costs like $1-2. ask your parents to send you a bit of $$ for food expenses until you do find a job. 3 is not a bad number. remember that you have never had a job before. keep looking on craigslist and indeed and backpage.com. good thing is that there are jobs in cities to be found. a lot of places that say students welcome and like hiring college students. so keep trying. i wish you luck.

I feel you completely! I was your age when I left my hometoen alone for college and I thought it was hell but let me tell you even with everything that was going on in my life then, it was the best and I learned a lot about myself and I don't regret it at all. Follow every lead you get, study hard and just know that you will be fine.

if you don't agree with them, is there a college closer to your town?
